CarryOn sharpens product focus under new owners

but the new shareholders see even more growth potential. They also see opportunities to strengthen within the textile sector and are looking at possibilities for company acquisitions. Of course, they too must learn the sensitivities in the industry and know how important it is to respect the relationship with distributors. But it is precisely the combination of their fresh perspective and our experience that can be very valuable.”

How are the roles within the company divided from now on?

“The day-to-day management of CarryOn is in the hands of Bruno D'hondt. Nicolas Renaux remains sales manager and Yannick Damster remains responsible for internal sales.”

It was previously known that CarryOn was to be acquired by a well-known textile supplier in the industry, but that fell through at the last minute. How was that situation handled?

“That sales process took over a year and involved a lot of energy. When the acquisition ultimately did not go through, it was a disappointment. Nevertheless, the existing agreements between us and that party remained in place. There is a desire on both sides to handle the situation professionally. We are collaborating operationally, and that is going well.”

Which products will CarryOn focus on after the acquisition?

“The main pillars remain items from the brands within the CHOICE group of JCK. This involves promotional umbrellas from Fare, backpacks and bags from Halfar, and the plush toys and ducks from Mbw. Travelite from Germany rounds out the collection with their travel bag and suitcase collections. Additionally, we want to position ourselves more strongly in textiles. That department has only existed for two years, and there is growth potential there. As mentioned, there are also opportunities with bicycle bags. The plan is primarily to further develop product categories and better utilize opportunities.”

You import existing brands and also produce products yourselves. Will that remain the case?

“Yes. That combination is very important to us. The agencies and brands we represent ensure a strong market position, but the margins are relatively limited. With our own production, we can create more added value and have the margins needed to invest. Moreover, many distributors do not have the knowledge, contacts, or financial capabilities to work directly with Asian producers. We continue to offer added value in that regard.”

The certification requirements for products on the European market have become stricter. How do you experience that as a producer?

“It certainly isn't getting any easier, but these kinds of developments are part of doing business in this industry. For us, stopping our own product development is not an option. We believe that our knowledge of production and sourcing is actually a major asset. That is why we continue to invest in the processes needed to meet all requirements. Fortunately, our new shareholders also bring experience from a sector where certifications and quality standards are equally important.”

Belgium and the Netherlands are important markets for CarryOn. What is the relationship between the two?

“Belgium remains our most important market. Our agency activities in the Netherlands are handled through BQS based on agreements made within the CHOICE group. Similarly, Belgian inquiries reach us via BQS. As a manufacturer, CarryOn does work for clients who are active internationally, which means products sometimes end up in the Netherlands as well. But if you look purely at our commercial focus, Belgium remains our home market. In addition, we also supply customers in France.”

You are now retiring from CarryOn, but you will remain active within the BAPP. What will your role be in that for the coming period?

“Within the BAPP, I will take on a coordinating role. The exact title of that position has yet to be determined. It essentially involves guiding projects and supporting the association. I particularly want to dedicate myself to the further professionalization of the sector. This includes projects related to sustainability, knowledge sharing, and training. Rejuvenation is also an important theme. We are seeing significant aging within our industry and therefore want to involve more young professionals in the association. Additionally, I want to further strengthen cooperation with the Dutch PPP. We have already realized great joint projects over the past few years, and I believe both organizations can learn a lot from each other. For me, therefore, this is not a complete farewell to the industry. I am letting go of CarryOn, but I will remain committed to the development of the sector in Belgium and beyond.”
