Essential Factors for a Successful Embroidery Design
FOTOCREDITS: AMANN & Söhne GmbH & Co. KG
Sometimes a design needs to be adapted to ensure that it can be embroidered correctly, attractively and durably .
Size and Position of the Pattern
The size of an embroidery pattern largely determines whether the original design needs to be adapted. Always check, for example, whether the design contains thin lines measuring less than one millimetre. Fine details, small areas and small lettering often need to be enlarged, simplified or sometimes even removed, as they may otherwise be impossible to embroider properly.
The position on the garment, the thread used and the type of design also play a role in determining the correct dimensions. Compromises are sometimes necessary to achieve a good final result.
For example, a design containing a single line of text may need to be divided over two lines so that the letters can be embroidered at a sufficiently large size.
Shadow effects also require special attention, particularly around lettering or coloured areas. These details may be too small and should be enlarged where possible without disrupting other parts of the design.
The position of the embroidery also influences the choice of stitch types. If a garment is used intensively or can easily catch on something, such as a door, piece of furniture or wall, long satin stitches are often less suitable for larger designs. This increases the risk of damage or of the thread being pulled loose.
Colour Distribution
With modern embroidery machines, the number of colours is generally no longer a major limitation. Many machines now have fifteen needles, which is usually more than sufficient in practice.
An embroidery design is divided into colour areas. It is important to consider not only the number of colours, but also how often a specific colour appears throughout the design.
Good preparation is essential. By carefully considering the colour sequence in advance, unnecessary complications during the punching process can be avoided.
Fabrics
The choice of fabric plays an important role in embroidery, as not every design is suitable for every material.
Highly textured fabrics, for example, make it more difficult to keep small details visible. Fine pattern elements can easily disappear into the texture of the fabric during embroidery.
