Next Gen: Demi Oomen
What started as a Media Design internship grew into a permanent role within the company. Demi now works four days a week as a creative account manager and is developing step by step throughout the entire process: from design and layout to orders, customer contact, and custom projects. She is certainly young, but anyone who speaks with her quickly notices that she is firmly in her element.
Not leaving Florisgifts
When Demi tells how she ended up at Florisgifts, she laughs. Actually, it was all meant to be temporary. During her Media Design studies at the Grafisch Lyceum, she started as an intern at Florisgifts. The plan was for her to stay for six months, but Demi really wanted to do a second internship period afterwards. That was possible.
When that final internship period began, she quickly realized that she actually didn't want to leave at all. Fortunately, Antoin and Lisa felt the same way. Together, they looked at the possibilities, and so her internship eventually grew into a permanent position within the company.
Her role has become increasingly broader over the past two years. Where she started with design, she is now also learning more and more about orders, customer contact, and everything involved in the entire process from request to delivery. It is precisely that variety that she enjoys. No day is the same, and every customer request brings something new with it.
From intern to permanent fixture at Florisgifts
Upon entering, I am greeted by a smiling young woman in a brand-new showroom filled with products, colours, Christmas hampers, and corporate gifts. It is warm outside, but inside, Christmas is already fully on display. That is typical of Florisgifts B.V., where preparations for the end of the year begin months in advance. Surrounded by products, ideas, and examples, I speak with Demi Oomen. She is 19 years old, comes from Overschie, and has become an indispensable part of the small Florisgifts team.
Showing that it *is* possible
Although Demi has a creative background, her favourite part of the job lies mainly in the contact with customers. She enjoys brainstorming, taking on questions, and turning challenges into solutions. It is precisely the interaction with clients that energizes her: listening to what someone is looking for, asking follow-up questions where necessary, and then thinking along about what *is* possible. “Clients often come to me with a challenge and think that something isn't possible,” she says. “That is precisely when I enjoy showing them that it *is* possible.”
Behind every request lies custom work, timing, communication, and often creative thinking. Custom-made projects, in particular, can change significantly along the way. Clients start with an idea, adjust it gradually, and sometimes only come up with wishes later on that were actually important earlier in the process. That makes the work challenging at times, but also precisely interesting. A great example of this is a custom-made keychain that Demi got to create for a client. Her design started as a flat drawing in Illustrator and was eventually developed into a 3D product. “That was the first time I created a design that actually became tangible. I was very proud of that.” For Demi, the satisfaction lies mainly in the moment when everything comes together and the client is happy with the end result.
